If Love Was a Bridge

Performed for Wahenga Wapya

If love was a bridge,I’d run across it,So you’d know I’ve turned on the heater for you,

I’d run across,Lungs burning, sweat stinging my eyes,Just to see you smile,As I tell you I love you again,

If your love was a bridge,That would make you an engineer,One capable of turning impassable distance into rent paid and bills shared,

Praise be to the measuring sticks your mother gave you,I wonder if I should similarly praise your father for the directions he molded you into with the palms of hardened hands? But perhaps engineers’ hearts are made of the stone they build with?

If love were a bridge,I don’t think ours would be a simple beam,I see ours as a cantilever,Holding on without asking the world for permission,Keeping us high aboveThe moored flotsam of the world

If our love were a bridge,It would always be worth crossing,With lungs burningAnd sweat stinging our eyes
