Island Living

April 2021 · Performed for Wahenga Wapya · NaPoWriMo 2021

Written to the prompt Imagine you’re walking down the street when you see a stranger you recognize. Describe the feeling.

The world is a sea,Each of us floating through it,Islands of flotsam,Buoyant jigsaw pieces looking for connection, a sense of space,Some of us islands have lighthouses,Although these lighthouses aren’t for everyone to see,These lighthouses shine within hidden spectrums,The colors of joy, regret, hope and pain forming rainbows that not all islands are fit to see,The world is a sea,And not all floating through it deserve the right to moor themselves to us,Yet in this floating, this never ending floating,We sometimes meet islands with lighthouses we recognize,Their lights blending with ours to form an ultraviolet all our own,The world is a sea,And I recognize an island floating through it,“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine”
